Introduction to Gypsum Recycled Content

Temple-Inland Certified Gypsum Board

An Introduction

Temple-Inland has been producing gypsum board that meets or exceeds all applicable codes and standards since the 1960’s. More than that, we’re committed to meeting and exceeding your expectations for product quality as well as environmental responsibility.

Originally produced entirely from pure gypsum mined in our Oklahoma quarry, now more than half of Temple-Inland’s current gypsum board production capacity is manufactured with recycled content gypsum. That’s a level you won’t find anywhere else.

In fact, Temple-Inland’s regular board product (manufactured in West Memphis, Arkansas and Cumberland City, Tennessee) is Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) certified in accordance to ISO 14021 standards to contain a minimum of 97% recycled gypsum and paper content on a dry weight basis. And the recycled gypsum and paper content of specialty products produced at these facilities is SCS certified to be at least 93% on a dry weight basis. Temple-Inland GreenGlass is SCS certified in accordance with ISO 14021 standards to contain a minimum of 90 percent pre-consumer recycled gypsum content on a dry-weight basis.

The synthetic gypsum we use in our West Memphis, Arkansas, and Cumberland City, Tennessee, facilities is created from byproducts of the energy generation process at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Cumberland plant. Besides being a chemical equivalent to natural gypsum, it’s one of the purest forms of synthetic gypsum available and it maintains a consistently smaller particle size than other raw material resources.

Finally, in addition to reducing our need for mined gypsum, Temple-Inland board manufactured with recycled gypsum content contributes valuable credits in various green-building rating systems.
