GreenGlass and the NAHB Green Building Certification

A recent survey of National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) members revealed that 2 out of 3 member builders incorporate some aspect of green building into their homes.  However, “green” means many different things to different people, from energy efficiency to water conservation to utilizing environmentally friendly building practices.  Until recently, homebuilders and remodelers were left to decipher the myriad of green opportunities themselves.

In 2009, ANSI approved the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard giving builders and remodelers a clear definition of green residential construction practices. Certification to the standard is issued by the NAHB Research Center, a qualified and independent third party.

The National Green Building Standard established six categories of green building:
  • Site Design, Preparation, and Development
  • Resource Conservation & Efficiency
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Water Conservation
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Homeowner Education in Operation and Maintenance

All types of residential construction – new or remodeled single-family homes, multifamily buildings, and residential land developments – may be measured against the standard.  Each project is scored based on the six categories with Resource Efficiency carrying the most weight.  The NAHB recognizes four thresholds of green performance point ratings:  Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald.

The use of GreenGlass products can contribute greatly toward the NAHB Green Building Standard credits in the Resource Efficiency category.

Pre-Consumer Recycled Content - specifies the use of recycled content products in major areas such as walls, floors, insulation and roofing.  Click here for Sustainable Materials Data

If at least two or more major components of the building have recycled content, then points are achieved based on the percentage of recycled content as follows:
  • 25% to <50% = 2 points
  • 50% to <75% = 4 points
  • 75% and higher = 6 points

All 1/2"- and 5/8"-thick GreenGlass fiberglass-faced gypsum products are SCS certified to ISO 14021 standards to contain at least 90% recycled content.
