Powerful Performance. Rapid Response. GreenGlass provided a strong dose of protection plus so much more. That’s what Chuck Zirbel, Project Manager with J.E. Kingham Construction, had to say about his experience using GreenGlass sheathing on the 133,000-square-foot expansion project for Lufkin Memorial Hospital.
“Our two biggest areas of concern were exterior weather protection and our fast track production schedule,” explains Zirbel. “We needed a sheathing that was highly moisture- and mold-resistant and that would absolutely be delivered on time, no exceptions. When I learned GreenGlass was a fiberglass-faced gypsum sheathing that offered the tough mold and moisture protection so critical to our project…and that it was made by Temple-Inland, a company with a reputation for quality and for staying ahead of demand for material, it was a no-brainer,” says Zirbel.
“I also appreciated the fact that it contained a high level of recycled content. Basically, GreenGlass offered a performance and environmental value from a single source. Something that, at the time, I hadn’t seen before with other glass-mat products.”
“We had used GreenGlass sheathing with great results on an earlier project,” says Jim Kingham, President and CEO of Kingham Construction. “It had performed quite well and the folks at Temple were very courteous and responsive in handling our business.”
GreenGlass is produced with the TemShield® Mold Protection System engineered into its gypsum core and is faced on both sides with naturally mold-resistant fiberglass mats. It scored a 10, the highest value possible, when tested in accordance with ASTM D3273, the standard test for mold resistance. GreenGlass has a high recycled content level of at least 90% that set a whole new industry standard.
“On the jobsite, there were two specific areas in which GreenGlass was extremely advantageous; first, it was stiffer and easier to apply…and second, when we put the tape on the joints, it was far more adhesive,” said Zirbel. “And, Temple-Inland was the only manufacturer that I was aware of that carried the documentation necessary for us in pursuing LEED certification.”
Developed for use in commercial and residential applications under a broad range of exterior veneers including brick, stone, metal, wood and vinyl as well as EIFS and curtainwall systems, GreenGlass also adds structural strength, fire resistance and a warranty for up to 12 months of exposure in normal weather conditions. And because GreenGlass is compatible with a variety of coatings, sealers and wrap systems, it won’t limit design options. GreenGlass 5⁄8" Type X panels have been tested in accordance with ASTM E119 and therefore may provide a fire-resistance rating of one or more hours depending upon the assembly in which it is applied. GreenGlass products have U.L. approval for use in over 140 fire-rated assemblies, providing more design flexibility.
Zirbel went on to conclude, “When you take into account the impressive product performance, the rapid response from GreenGlass support staff, the recycled content and green building benefits, as well as Temple-Inland’s ongoing commitment to supporting our community above and beyond the jobsite – partnering with GreenGlass was an excellent decision. We will certainly be using more GreenGlass products as application allows.”
