Certified Lumber

Sustainability

Temple-Inland southern pine lumber provides excellent construction performance characteristics and a range of environmental benefits that make it one of the most sustainable building products available. Consider these important qualities:

  1. Temple-Inland has been certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program standard and has been approved to use the SFI program's on-product label in association with their lumber products.
  2. Our lumber is a better insulator than any other structural material because it doesn’t conduct heat like steel and concrete. Our southern pine lumber is 400 times less heat conductive than steel, so homes built with Temple-Inland studs require less heating and cooling energy.
  3. Temple-Inland lumber is also a very affordable building material. That’s because it’s easy to use and widely available. Its practicality and workability make construction simple and efficient for use in residential or commercial applications, including multi-story projects.
  4. It’s arguably the most renewable of all building materials. Every part of a log can be used, recycled and/or regenerated. Bark is used for fuel, sawdust and wood chips are used to make fiberboard and particleboard, and clear wood becomes lumber. Even recovered wood sugars can become livestock feed additives. Ultimately trees can be replanted to replace those harvested and the process can cycle again much faster than other alternatives.
  5. Southern pine even provides benefits while it’s growing. It takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen, improving the environment for us all.
  6. Producing Temple-Inland lumber minimizes the generation of greenhouse gas emissions more so than its non-renewable counterparts, steel and concrete. In fact, while wood accounts for 46% of all industrial raw materials worldwide, it uses a mere 4% of the energy required to produce raw materials into useful products.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI)

The SFISM program is administered by the Sustainable Forestry Board, a multi-stakeholder board comprised of representatives from the environmental, professional, conservation, industry, academia and public sectors. This board is responsible for the development and administration of SFI program standards and verification procedures.
