- Lap siding is not recommended for mansard roofs.
- Lap siding should not be used for wall bracing.
EnduraSiding lap may be applied directly to studs or over sheathing. Stud spacing must not be greater than 16" o.c. A building paper/air barrier should be used when applying the siding direct to studs or over wood board sheathing.
Siding should not be fastened to green or crooked structural framing members. Siding should not be installed over rain-soaked or buckled sheathing materials.
Nailing
Follow lap fastening table recommendations regarding nail types, sizes and spacing.
DO NOT USE STAPLES. SEE NAILING GUIDELINES
Single-Board Lap
A starter strip approximately 1 1/2" wide and the same thickness as the siding should be installed level with the bottom edge of the sillplate. Nail the starter strip with rust-resistant nails. Install the first course of siding to extend at least 1/4 ", but no more than 1", below the starter strip. Nail the bottom edge of the first course of siding 16" o.c. and through the starter strip at each stud location. Maintain moderate contact or a slight gap at all butt joints – never force-fit siding strips.
The second and all succeeding courses of siding must lap the previous course a minimum of 3/4". Locate nails 3/8" from the bottom edge. Nail through both lap siding courses and into each framing member. Nails must penetrate studs at least 1 1/2".
All joints must fall on the studs and be nailed on both top and bottom on each side of the joint.
Offset the joints course-to-course for best appearance. Allow at least 6" between the lower edge of the siding and the soil or wherever water may collect. Do not install siding so that it is in contact with concrete or masonry.
Where the siding meets a finished roof, it should be spaced at least 2" from the roofing material with proper wall-to-roof flashing.
Install spacer strips for continuous horizontal support behind the siding wherever it is notched out above or below openings.
Leave a 1/8" to 3/16" gap between the siding and any window or door frames and any trim boards. Caulk these gaps after the siding is installed and before painting.
Fasten siding by nailing 16" o.c. Nailing should progress from one end of the piece to the other, never from both ends toward the middle. Leave nail slightly above the surface. SEE NAILING GUIDELINES. Do not set or over drive the nails, especially when siding is applied over soft material such as foam sheathing. Use formed metal corners or wood corner boards at outside and inside corner locations.
Multi-Board Lap
Corner details should be the same as single-board lap.
Note carefully the number and location of nails.
When this siding is installed diagonally, a nailable backing such as plywood or OSB sheathing is required. Fastener spacing must be 16" o.c. or less. Butt joints must be vertical over support framing.
